Construction company fined $200,000 after worker dies from falling cement

TORONTO – A construction company has been fined $200,000 after a worker was fatally crushed by a cement panel in Toronto, Ont.
Ontario’s Ministry of Labour says the incident took place in 2017 when an employee from J.N.D. Erectors Limited was transferring cement panels from a truck using a crane.
The ministry says one of the panels shifted and fell on top of the worker. It says the panel weighed more than 2,700 kilograms, and the worker died from the resulting injuries.
The ministry says its investigation found the panel would not have toppled if it had been secured at all times.
It says the company was found guilty under health and safety laws of failing to ensure that material is stored and moved in a manner that does not endanger a worker.
The court also fined the company a 25 per cent victim surcharge, earmarked for a provincial fund to assist victims of crime.
