TORONTO — Officials say one person has died and another is in life-threatening condition after an explosion at a chemical plant in Toronto’s east end.

Toronto Paramedic Services say one person was pronounced dead at the scene and a man in his 40s was rushed to a trauma centre.

Deputy commander Shawn Staff says three other people were assessed on scene, but not taken to hospital.

The explosion occurred shortly before 10 a.m.

Toronto Fire District Chief Stephan Powell says the explosion occurred at Siltech, a company that makes silicone products.

The explosion triggered a small fire that officials say has now been extinguished.

Police say that roads and railways in the area have been shut down.

Powell says light smoke was visible when firefighters first arrived, and then encountered heavy smoke inside the plant.

“This is a sad day,” he said.
