Incident left motorcyclist with serious injuries
MARKHAM, Ont. (The Canadian Press) — Police north of Toronto have charged one of their own with impaired driving after an alleged hit-and-run that sent a motorcyclist to hospital.
Investigators say an SUV collided with a motorcycle in Markham, Ont., Sunday evening, seriously injuring the biker.
They allege the driver of the SUV left the scene, but officers caught up with him later.
They say Const. Nathan Coates, a member since 2005, has been suspended and charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Police Chief Eric Jolliffe says the incident is “extremely disheartening.”
York police have been vocal in their efforts to curb drunk driving after three children and their grandfather were killed in a crash in Vaughan, Ont., in 2015.
