Attempted murder charge in stabbing of Manitoba First Nations police officer

ROSSBURN, Man. – RCMP say a 21-year-old man has been charged following the stabbing of a First Nations police officer on a northern Manitoba reserve.

The officer and a suspect were both injured during an arrest outside the Waywayseecappo First Nation gaming centre near Rossburn last week.

Police said at the time that there was an altercation between the officer and two suspects in the parking lot.

The 29-year-old officer was stabbed multiple times, fired his weapon, and one of the suspects was wounded.

The seven-year police veteran was treated in hospital and released.

Matthew Benn, 21, of the Waywayseecappo First Nation has been charged with attempted murder and remains in custody.
