Two Mounties injured in shootout
FEDERAL — Two RCMP officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries in an exchange of gunfire
during an 18-hour standoff near an Alberta village, located approximately 110 kilometres
southwest of Edmonton.
At about 5 pm on December 3, Mounties were called to a residence in a sparsely populated
area west of Breton, Alberta after receiving a report that a 35-year-old man had been shot,
says Alberta RCMP spokesperson Sergeant Tim Taniguchi. A standoff ensued and at approximately
3:30 am the next morning, police exchanged gunfire with “unknown occupants in the residence,”
Taniguchi reports. By about 11 am, two people were taken into custody.
Two members of the Red Deer RCMP’s emergency response team were taken to hospital.
One 10-year veteran suffered superficial wounds and was released from hospital shortly
thereafter; the second officer, who has more than 30 years of service with the RCMP,
sustained more severe injuries, Taniguchi reports.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates incidents involving serious
injury that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer, will investigate.
Bradley Beaver, 38, has been charged with three counts of attempted murder, two counts of
endangering the life of a peace officer and several weapons-related offences.
