Sentence seeks to bolster education

FORT MCMURRAY — Clean Harbors Energy and Industrial Services Corp. was issued a creative sentence of $85,000 in November following the serious injury of a worker almost three years earlier.

The company received the fine after pleading guilty to failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker, notes information from Alberta Human Services (AHS) in Edmonton.

On February 4, 2009, a vacuum truck operator was cleaning out the back of the vehicle at a location northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta when he fell approximately five metres into a sump pit, the AHS reports. The worker suffered a broken clavicle, fractured ribs, a fractured orbital socket and bruising to his head.

Clean Harbors Energy and Industrial Services must pay a $5,000 fine and make an $80,000 payment to Keyano College’s occupational health and safety certificate program. That money will be used to upgrade and further develop the course.
