Lighting up prompts penalties

MOUNT PEARL — A business and one of its directors were fined $500 and $200, respectively, in November after pleading guilty to violations of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Smoke Free Environment Act.

The charges against Mount Pearl-based Newfoundland Lighting & Traffic Systems Ltd. and a company director follow workplace inspections conducted in December, 2010 by Service NL’s occupational health and safety staff.

The company was charged with failing to ensure a person refrains from smoking in a commercial establishment open to the public, notes a statement from the department. The director, for his part, was charged with smoking in that workplace.
