Body of Yukon Mountie found

FEDERAL — The body of a Mountie who went missing when an RCMP river boat capsized on the Stewart River in the Yukon on July 13 has been found.

Constable Michael Potvin’s body was located on the evening of July 30, notes a statement from the Yukon RCMP.

On July 13, Potvin and another member of the RCMP’s Mayo detachment were operating the river boat when it began taking on water and capsized. The other officer remained with the boat and was able to reach shore safely, but Potvin, who was not wearing a personal flotation device, tried to swim to shore.

Seeing Potvin submerge, witnesses sounded an alarm to alert the community. Search and rescue workers were assisted by resident volunteers, government employees, boats, divers, off-highway vehicles, helicopters, aircraft and a police service dog.

The search, however, proved fruitless in locating Potvin.
