Propane blast burns roofer
LONDON — An Ontario manufacturer of elevators and escalators received a $90,000 fine in mid-July for one violation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Kone Inc. pleaded guilty to failing to ensure a worker used rubber gloves, mats, shields and other protective equipment and procedures adequate to ensure protection from electrical shocks and burns, notes a statement from Ontario’s Ministry of Labour (MOL) in Toronto.
The charge and guilty plea follows an incident in which a worker sustained wrist and facial fractures on September 11, 2008.
That day, the worker was fixing the circuit board for an elevator at the University of Western Ontario in London. While on a ladder in the pit and shaft area of the elevator with its power still on, the worker, who was not wearing appropriate protective gear, touched the back of the circuit board. The resulting shock caused the worker to fall to the pit’s concrete floor.
