Oilfield company faces charges

EDMONTON — Calgary-based Precision Drilling Corporation faces three oh&s charges following an incident two years ago in which a worker sustained leg injuries.

Alberta Employment and Immigration (AEI) in Edmonton reports that Precision Drilling has been charged under the province’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and associated code. Specifically, counts against the company cite its failure to ensure the following: the health and safety of a worker; a rotary tong was equipped with a safety device to prevent uncontrolled movement of the tong if the primary device fails; and all reasonable steps were taken to ensure equipment is contained, restrained or protected to eliminate potential danger.

The charges follow the serious injury of a floorhand while working on a slant service rig on July 14, 2008, AEI notes in a statement. A power tong was dislodged from the tong car while a tubing string was being lowered into an oil well. The tong then fell, landing on the worker’s leg.
