Guards keep lid on disturbance

HALIFAX — Staff at the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility in Dartmouth avoided injury during an overnight disturbance and lockdown at the provincial jail.

One inmate assaulted another at about 9 pm on June 15, resulting in the jail being locked down for three hours, notes a statement from Nova Scotia’s Department of Justice in Halifax. At the height of the incident, the department reports that 17 inmates caused property damage in one of the jail’s units and refused to return to their cells.

Halifax Regional Police were called as a precaution, but their services were not required. “I want to commend the staff for their quick, professional response in getting the disturbance under control,” says David Horner, executive director of corrections for the provincial justice department. A provincial investigation was planned.
