Charges urged in assaults
CRANBROOK — Separate attacks on three police officers in Cranbrook, British Columbia have spurred recommendations that assault charges be laid.
The first incident occurred as police were patrolling outside of Shotgun Willy’s Cabaret at about 2:30 am on June 26, notes a statement from the RCMP’s Cranbrook detachment. After witnessing a fight break out, two officers stepped in to intervene, prompting one suspect to flee on foot. When the officers caught up to the man and attempted an arrest, he spit on one officer and grabbed his can of pepper spray before being restrained.
The second incident at 11 pm on June 27 involved an officer who was responding to a call of an impaired driver on a motorbike. After locating the driver, the man resisted arrest and a struggle broke out, notes a statement from police. The officer fell to the ground and the suspect punched him in this head, resulting in minor injuries. Two other officers later arrived, and a 17-year-old was arrested.
In the second incident, police have recommended several charges, including resisting arrest, assaulting a peace officer, impaired operation of a motor vehicle and breach of probation. In the first case, assault charges were being urged.
