Better safety for workers on vessels

FEDERAL — Federal requirements governing vessels are getting an update.

New regulations for the marine sector mean that employees working on board vessels will now enjoy the same level of occupational health and safety protection as off-board employees, notes a joint statement from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada and Transport Canada, issued in June.

“We are implementing these regulations to protect marine workers and prevent accidents and injuries in their places of work,” says federal labour minister Lisa Raitt.

“The Government of Canada has taken action to improve the health and safety of marine workers by taking into account the particular characteristics of vessels as a workplace,” adds federal transport minister John Baird.

The regulatory changes harmonize the new regulations with the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations. Extensive consultations were completed to ensure requirements reflect current technology, national and international standards, and modern marine industry practices, the statement notes.
