PITTSBURGH Industrial Scientific Corporation recently supplied its iTrans fixed-point gas monitors to the city of Jacksonville, Fla. as part of a comprehensive security plan for Super Bowl XXXIX. “The city of Jacksonville went to great lengths to ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors for such a high-profile event,” said Kent McElhattan, Industrial Scientific President and CEO. “We are pleased to have been
asked to play a role in ensuring the public’s safety. It indicates their confidence in our ability to provide the highest quality equipment for continually and accurately assessing potential gas hazards.”

As an estimated 200,000 visitors were expected to attend many events in Jacksonville throughout the weekend, the iTrans units were monitoring for combustible gases at several points along the city’s sewer system near Alltel Stadium. Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA), the company
that operates the city’s power, water and sewer utilities, had the monitors installed and wired to a control system that would have alerted officials if any significant amount of flammable liquid was dumped into the city’s sewage system. JEA provided further protection by locking 200 water meters on abandoned properties in the downtown area to prevent
tampering with the city’s water supply.

In 2000, when Jacksonville won its first bid to be the host the National Football League’s biggest game, the city initially planned to spend $500,000 on security. After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Jacksonville city officials initiated a full-scale security plan for the event involving 53 federal, state and local agencies including the FBI, Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, National Guard and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s
Office.
