Introduction to Management and Organizational Behaviour
This course is designed to educate the learner in the essentials of organizations and how they function.
Basics like organizational elements, management levels and functions, organizational cultural values
and dynamics, and integrating OSHE decision making systems into the organizational processes are among
key learning outcomes.
Planning is foundational to any vital organization. The planning process is where the OSH&E practitioners
begin integrating OSH&E measures into the daily routines of the organization's life. What is a plan
and how is it developed? Who is responsible for planning? How can the OSH&E practitioner ensure
adequate attention is given to OSH&E issues during the planning process? These are among the questions
effective OSHE practitioners will develop answers for in this course.
While organizational structures will differ from one company to the next, all organizations have some
sort of structure. How does an organization's structure affect one's ability to implement OSH&E
objectives effectively? This course teaches the learner to identify the type of structure used by their
current company and understand how that structure affects their role in OSH&E.
Management and leadership are two very different concepts that will be considered in this course. OSH&E
desperately needs effective leaders ‚ with a clear vision of where their organization needs to go and
how it can get there. By discussing basic elements of the leadership process and identifying the tools
of effective leaders, this course is designed to equip the learner with the essentials of leading others
to perform effectively and achieve the organization's goals.
The ability to implement and maintain control over organizational OSH&E interests is an indispensable
skill. As well, many OSH&E directors supervise employees. How should the director handle a performance
appraisal or issue a reprimand? How do good/bad control principles impact OSHE program effectiveness?
Change is inevitable, but many are beginning to realize that not all change is good. Assuming that change
is always necessary or progressive is ignorant, and therefore dangerous. Sometimes change is based on
misinformation, inaccurate assumptions, arrogance or fear; rather than on clarity, knowledge and confidence.
Initiating and managing effective, sustainable change is the focus of this course.
This course is designed to help the learner identify the benefits of a strong ethical framework, find
his/her way through the complications of an ethical dilemma and distinguish between legal and ethical
behaviour.
Groups Creating synergy in a team is a central leadership responsibility. This course answers very practical
questions: "When should teams be used and when shouldn't they be used?", "What are basic approaches
to team work?", "What does a healthy/ unhealthy team look like?" and "How can a healthy, effective team
be developed?
Conflict can be a very constructive energy when managed properly. This course assists the learner in
the development of a practical approach to effective communication and conflict management.
