Nova Scotia premier says no word on reopening of Donkin mine after meeting company

The immediate future of Cape Breton's Donkin coal mine remained murky last week following a meeting between company officials and Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston. The underground operation has been shut down since the province imposed a stop-work order in response to a rockfall in July, and owner Kameron Coal Management Ltd., has since laid off its 130-member workforce.


Flight safety in Canada is plummeting, a confidential UN agency report finds

Canada has received a C grade on flight safety and oversight — down from an A+ and far below most of its peers — according to a draft report from a United Nations agency. The confidential audit from the International Civil Aviation Organization and obtained by The Canadian Press says the country has fallen precipitously to a score of 64 out of 100, with three safety areas in particular seeing a big drop-off.


TSB calls for better jurisdictional safety co-operation in wake of Nunavut commercial fishing death

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is calling for better co-operation between jurisdictions — including itself, the Department of Employment and Social Development, and Territorial governments — in the wake of a commercial fishing accident that left one worker dead.


WorkSafeBC looking for feedback on requirements for three-point seat belts in high-risk vehicles

The proposed changes would mandate minimum three-point seat belts in specific high-risk environments, particularly for certain types of ROPS-equipped (Roll-Over Protective Structure) prime movers. These include haul trucks, prime movers used in forestry operations or for activities related to fighting forest fires, and those used for land clearing on steep slopes exceeding 35%.
